What is Ethanol?

Ethanol is a clear, colorless, liquid alcohol made through the fermentation of sugars. Ethanol can be produced from biological feedstock, primarily grains, such as corn and wheat. Ethanol has a very low melting point and a high boiling point, which has made it an ideal replacement for mercury in thermometers. Furthermore, its low freezing point also makes it a principle ingredient in antifreeze for automotive radiators. Ethanol is in high demand in recent years as a fuel for gas and diesel vehicles. The intention of using ethanol is to reduce dependence on imported oil to manufacture gasoline, as well as creating new markets for farmers. Though ethanol does not produce the same amount of energy as gasoline in vehicles, it is a clean, renewable, energy that can assist in reducing the amount of greenhouse gas emissions produced by vehicles.
